A Silhouette Cameo 5 Plus machine may show certain issues with daily functions, such as inconsistent cutting, misaligned cuts, and the cutting mat not sticking properly to the material. These problems are very common and can be resolved by using the methods outlined below.

Issue 1: Poor or Inconsistent Cutting

The Silhouette Cameo 5 Plus can cut poorly and inconsistently on materials when the blade is not working properly. With time and use, the cutting blades may become dull, resulting in inconsistent cutting. Additionally, it can also happen when the material settings are not set correctly in the Silhouette Studio. However, this problem can be resolved by using these methods.

Method 1: Re-insert or Replace the Blade

The poor cutting issue in the Silhouette Cameo 5 Plus can be resolved by reinserting the blade or replacing it with a new one, following these steps.

  1. Turn off the Silhouette machine by disconnecting its power cord.
  2. Then, press its power button until the light stops blinking.
  3. Open the machine’s lid, and check the carriage 1 on the left side, which has the main blade. The right carriage is for other tools.
  4. Open the small latch on carriage 1 to release the blade housing. Then pull out the blade from its place.
  5. Check if the blade has any material leftovers, such as vinyl or paper, sticking to it. Clean the blade with a small brush.
  6. Reinsert the blade into the blade housing and secure it with the small latch.
  7. Close the machine’s lid by securely placing the blade in the carriage 1.

If the blade is damaged or not in good condition, replace it with a new one using the following steps.

  1. Power off the machine and release the blade by following the steps above.
  2. Remove the old blade by pulling it out of the blade housing.
  3. Place a new blade into the holder safely without touching the blade tip, as it’s very sharp.
  4. Lock the blade using the small latch.
  5. Close the machine’s lid.

Now check if the machine cuts material correctly and consistently. If re-inserting or replacing the blade doesn’t resolve the issue, check the next method.

Method 2: Verify the Settings in Silhouette Studio

Setting incorrect material and blade type in Silhouette Studio can also prevent the machine from cutting correctly. Hence, use these steps to verify the settings in Silhouette Studio.

  1. Open Silhouette Studio and locate the Send panel at the top.
  2. Select the correct tool type under the Tool 1 section, such as Autoblade.
  3. Select your material type from the respective section, such as vinyl, paper, cardstock, etc.

Finally, the Silhouette Studio will adjust the right cutting depth and other parameters according to the material.

Issue 2: Cutting Mat Not Sticking Properly

The cutting mat may not stick well to the material, resulting in the material slipping and uneven cuts. This problem can be resolved by replacing or cleaning the cutting mat and ensuring the material is placed correctly on the mat.

Method 1: Replace or Clean the Mat

With time and use, the cutting mats can get dull and dirty, which stops materials from adhering. In this situation, you can clean the mat or buy a new one.

To clean a cutting mat, use a mild detergent and a gentle scrubber. Then, rinse it with water and let it dry completely. Finally, try using the mat for cutting materials. However, if the mat still can’t stick well, it’s time to replace it with a new one.

Method 2: Ensure the Material is Placed Correctly

If the material is not placed well on the cutting mat, it won’t be cut correctly. Hence, ensure that the material is aligned with the edges of the cutting mat.

Issue 3: Print and Cut Misalignment

The printed design may not cut correctly while using the print and cut feature on the Silhouette Cameo 5 Plus. The final design may be slightly off and not aligned with the print. This problem primarily occurs when the registration marks in Silhouette Studio are disabled. These registration marks ensure that the cutting intersects the printed design. In this situation, follow the solution given below.

Solution: Enable the Registration Marks

Follow the steps to enable registration marks in Silhouette Studio.

  1. Open the Silhouette Studio app on the computer and open a design.
  2. Go to the Page Setup Panel at the top-right corner of the app.
  3. Select the Page Setup icon in the form of a piece of paper.
  4. Choose the Registration Marks tab under the Page Setup Panel, and select a registration mark type. Type 1 is for default registration marks for print-and-cut projects.
  5. Select other settings such as the size of the mark and the distance between the design and the registration mark.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why Is My Silhouette Cameo 5 Plus Not Cutting Properly?

A Silhouette Cameo 5 Plus doesn’t cut properly when its blades are dull or the correct blade is not selected in the Silhouette Studio. Additionally, if the correct material is not selected in the software, the machine won’t cut the design properly.

How do I Make My Cutting Mat Stick Well to The Material?

To ensure your cutting mat is sticky to the material on the Silhouette Cameo 5 Plus, ensure it is clean and the material is placed at the edge of the mat. If the mat is dirty, clean it with detergent and water, and dry it. This way, the cutting mat will regain its stickiness.

What Are Registration Marks in the Silhouette Studio?

Registration marks are the specific lines in Silhouette Studio that ensure the design is cut precisely. These marks are used in the Print and Cut feature in the Silhouette Studio. Overall, these marks ensure that the design is cut aligned to the print.
