Besides setup and software issues, Portrait 4 can face many other problems as well. Not cutting properly, cutting too deep, and paper getting stuck in the machine are the most common examples. Hereβs why these problems occur on your machine and how to troubleshoot them.
Issue 1: Portrait 4 Not Cutting Properly
Silhouette Portrait 4 fails to cut properly when the tools inside it are not set properly or the blade has worn out and needs a replacement.
- Power off, and unplug the machine if it is plugged into power.
- Open the clamp on the tool carriage. Make sure the AutoBlade is in Tool Slot 1, straight and set firmly with no gap. Close the clamp until it clicks.Β
- Remove the blade. Inspect the tip to ensure that it is not dull or chipped, or clogged with debris. Clean or replace tips as needed.Β
- Use a soft brush or cloth to remove dust or scraps around the blade and roller.
- Make sure the cutting mat is sticky enough to hold your material flat. If not, replace it or make it sticky again.
Issue 2: Cutting Too Deep
If your Portrait 4 machine is cutting too deep, hereβs how to fix it.
- Turn off your Portrait 4 and take the blade out.Β
- Look closely at the blade tip. If itβs sticking out too much, twist it back a little so only a tiny bit shows, especially when cutting thin materials like vinyl or paper.
- Open Silhouette Studio on your computer and go to the Send panel. Find the Force setting and lower the number. Too much force makes the blade cut deep.
- Check the Passes option. If itβs set to more than one, change it to 1. More passes mean the machine cuts over the same line again and again, which can tear the material.
- Make sure you selected the right material in the software. For example, choose βVinylβ if you are cutting vinyl.
Issue 3: Paper Getting Stuck In The Machine
Paper gets stuck in the Portrait 4 machine when the cutting mat is not sticky enough or the paper is loaded misaligned. Follow these steps to solve the problem.
- Turn the machine off and unplug it.Β
- First, gently remove the paper by holding it from each side.Β
- Make certain that there are no small bits of paper debris under the rollers or blade. If there are any pieces, clean them out using a soft brush or tweezers.Β
- Inspect your cutting mat if it is not sticky enough to hold the paper; re-stick, or use a new cutting mat.Β
- Always load the paper straight, in alignment with the guides of the mat.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Uneven cuts are typically caused by the blade not being positioned properly, the mat losing its stickiness, or the material not being positioned flat. Ensure the blade is in the proper position, clean the rollers, and make sure the mat sticks to the material properly. Also, make sure you are using the correct material type in Silhouette Studio.
Loud noises typically mean there is debris stuck around the rollers or blade holder. Turn off the power, remove the blade, and gently clean the area using a soft brush. Make sure the tool carriage moves freely. Do not overload the machine with incorrect or thick materials.
Follow these steps to change the AutoBlade in your Portrait 4 machine.
- Turn off and unplug the Portrait 4 machine.
- Open the clamp for Tool Slot 1.
- Pull out the old AutoBlade.
- Inspect the new AutoBlade for damage and remove any protective cover.
- Insert the AutoBlade straight into the Tool Slot 1 and ensure there is no gap showing.
- Close the clamp until it clicks in place.
