Silhouette Curio 2 can show various issues that affect its overall performance. For instance, failed print and cut jobs, problems with carriage movements, and material not adhering properly to the electrostatic bed. Other issues can also be possible with machine connectivity. However, all these issues can be fixed using these methods.
Problem 1: Print and Cut the Registration Failure
Print and cut the design, which should be marked with registration marks in Silhouette Studio. It allows the designs to be cut correctly on the material. If these registration marks fail, the design is cut unevenly. It may cut at the center but leave the edges, and vice versa.
There are three reasons for registration failure:
- Wrong media size
- Design is outside the safe printing and cutting borders
- Elements are too close to the hashed area or registration marks
Solution 1: Select the Right Media Size
If the media size is set as Printer instead of Letter, A4, or any other specific sizes, it will likely cause a registration mark error. Therefore, use these steps to set the correct media.
- Go to File at the top left corner of the Silhouette Studio, and select Print Page Setup.
- Select the printer you are using to print your design.
- Select your paper size that you will be using, and click OK.
- Open the page setup on the right-hand side of the screen, and select media size and set it to Printer.
Solution 2: Turn on Print Border
If the design is outside of the print and cutting borders, registration marks won’t work. Therefore, use the steps given below to turn on the print border.
- Open Grid Settings, and check the box to show the print border. The border will help you recognize where the printing will happen.
- Plus, keep the design at a distance from the hashed area and below the registration marks. It will prevent registration errors that may happen due to designs being too close.
- Also, ensure that the two designs or elements don’t overlap each other to avoid any errors.
Problem 2: Problems With Carriage Movements
The carriage is a part of the Silhouette Curio 2 machine, which holds the blades and other tools like pens and markers. Usually, the carriage moves back and forth while cutting a design. However, sometimes it may stop moving for many reasons. For instance, a build-up of dirt in the machine, a technical glitch, and issues with connections or outdated software. Fortunately, the problem can be resolved with these troubleshooting methods.
Solution 1: Clean the Carriage Path
One of the common reasons for problems with carriage movements is the obstruction from debris or other material. Use these steps to clean the carriage path:
- Power off the Silhouette Curio 2 from the main wall outlet.
- Open the machine’s lid and check for dust and leftover materials.
- Confirm that all packaging tapes and materials have been removed from the machine.
Check if the machine is clean, and no screws are loose. Once it’s confirmed, try using the machine. If the issue persists, check the next method.
Solution 2: Run a Carriage Reset
It’s a simple method where you can simply manually move the carriage left and right three times, and stop the carriage on the right after the third movement. However, please turn off the machine before performing, and turn it on later.
Solution 3: Update the Software
If the software or firmware is not updated, it causes problems with the carriage movement. Therefore, ensure that the software is updated using these steps.
- Open the Silhouette Studio and go to Help at the top.
- Select Check for Updates, and go to Edit.
- Select Preferences, and then Updates.
- Set the “Check for updates” option as desired.
Problem 3: Material Not Adhering to the Electrostatic Bed
The material may not adhere properly to the machine’s electrostatic bed for many reasons, such as:
- Incompatible material type
- Weak electrostatic charge on the bed
These issues can be fixed, and the materials will start adhering again.
Solution 1: Avoid Using Heavy Materials
Generally, the electrostatic bed works well with smooth materials, including cardstock, copy paper, and adhesive vinyl. Hence, if someone uses a heavy textured material, it won’t adhere to the bed. Therefore, don’t use fabrics as they may get curled and ruin the project.
Solution 2: Check the Condition of the Material and the Bed
When the electrostatic bed or the material is not clean, it will cause problems with the material loading. Hence, remove any dust or debris from the bed and the material. Also, ensure that the material is not curled up. Place the material flat on the electrostatic bed.
Solution 3: Press the Electrostatic Button
After using the electrostatic bed several times, it may lose its electrostatic charge, leading to issues with the material adherence. That’s why you need to rebuild the electrostatic attraction between the material and the bed’s surface. Fortunately, the Silhouette Curio 2 has an Electrostatic Attraction button that can be pressed to do it. Then, wait for 60 seconds until the charges spread evenly on the ES surface.
Problem 4: Machine Not Cutting New Designs
Sometimes, it may happen that you send a design to cut to the Silhouette Curio 2, and it cuts the previous design. In simple terms, it doesn’t recognize the new design and again cuts a design you sent earlier. It usually happens when the machine has some technical problems. However, it can be resolved using a few easy troubleshooting methods.
Solution: Restart the Computer and the Machine
As it can be a minor technical glitch, restarting the machine and the computer can resolve it. Here are the steps to do it.
Step 1: Restart the Computer
- Go to the Start menu at the bottom of the computer’s screen, and click the power button.
- Select the Restart button, and wait until it restarts.
Step 2: Restart Silhouette Curio 2
- Unplug the machine from the wall outlet and from the computer.
- Keep it disconnected for a minute, and replug it into the power outlet and into the computer.
- Turn on the machine by pressing its power button for 3 seconds.
Once both devices are turned on, test the machine. If the problem persists, close and re-open the Silhouette Studio on your computer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The carriage in your Silhouette Curio 2 doesn’t move when there is an obstruction in the path, whether dust and debris or leftovers of materials. Plus, losing small screws also leads to problems with the smooth movement of the carriages. Therefore, the carriage path should be cleaned with a cloth, and any stuck material should be removed.
If your material isn’t sticking well to the surface of the electrostatic bed on Silhouette Curio, the material or ES must not be cleaned. Plus, the electrostatic charges on the bed might not be evenly distributed. In this situation, you can clean the surface of ES and press the Electrostatic attraction button on the machine to resolve the issue.
If registration marks stopped working on the Silhouette Curio 2, there could be a few reasons behind it. For instance, you might have selected the wrong media size, the designs are too close to the registration marks, or the elements are too close to each other. Sometimes, the elements overlap each other, which stops registration marks from working.
