A Cricut Joy machine can experience certain mild to moderate issues that affect daily crafting, like Design Space not recognizing Cricut Joy, the machine stops in the middle of cutting, and materials get stuck in the machine. However, these problems can be easily fixed by the troubleshooting methods mentioned below.
Problem 1: Cricut Joy Not Recognized by Design Space
The Design Space software may not recognize the Cricut Joy if it has been outdated or if there is a technical glitch in the device. Here is how to resolve this issue.
Fix 1: Restart Cricut Joy and Device
Whenever there is a minor issue in a Cricut Joy, a restart can work to fix it. Here are the steps to do that:
- Click the Start menu on the computer, and click the power button.
- Select the Restart button and then wait for the PC to restart.
- Disconnect the power cord of the Cricut Joy from the main power switch.
- Reconnect the power cord after 30 seconds.
Check if the Design Space recognizes the machine. Check the selected machine under the Machine Selection option on the Design Space. If the problem persists, check the next method.
Fix 2: Update the Design Space Software
When the Design Space software is outdated, it doesn’t recognize the machine. Cricut releases new versions of Design Space, and if you don’t update it, technical glitches will arise with the connection. Update the software using these steps.
- Launch the Design Space on the device.
- Click the bell icon at the top next to the profile icon. This bell icon is for notifications regarding the latest updates.
- Check if there is an option for “check for updates” in the menu.
- Click that option, and click the notification to update the Design Space.
The software will be updated automatically.
Problem 2: Cricut Joy Stops Mid-cut
Cricut Joy can stop in the middle of cutting a material. It may happen when the connection is compromised, or it is placed too far from the device, or there is a power interruption. However, it can be fixed with these methods.
Fix 1: Check the Power Connection
Ensure that the machine is connected to a stable power source. Its power cord shouldn’t be loosely connected to the power adapter. If the problem persists, use another power socket to connect the machine. The problem may sometimes lie in the power sockets.
Fix 2: Keep the Devices Close Enough
As Cricut Joy only operates by a Bluetooth connection, it needs proximity to the device. Therefore, if you keep them more than 10-15 feet apart from each other, cutting will be affected. Always keep a Cricut Joy within 10-15 feet of the device.
Problem 3: Materials Are Getting Stuck in the Cricut Joy
Materials may get stuck on the cutting mat in the Cricut Joy due to the buildup of excessive dirt or curled edges of the mat. When the position of materials or mat is not properly aligned, the materials won’t be cut appropriately. Hence, there are certain solutions to follow.
Fix 1: Trim the Material for Cricut Joy
Cricut Joy has a tiny size, and it can’t take up long and lengthy materials inside. If someone tries, the material will get stuck, and the desired results won’t be achieved. Therefore, materials should be taken either in a small size or they should be trimmed before use.
Fix 2: Discard the Curled or Worn-Out Cutting Mat
A curled or worn-out cutting mat isn’t effective. If it can be fixed, straighten the curled edges and insert it so that it goes beneath the rollers and doesn’t get folded upon insertion.
Note: Don’t use the materials that aren’t compatible with a Cricut Joy, including hard materials like balsa wood, fabric, print then cut materials, etc.
Fix 3: Clean the Cutting Mat
The materials get stuck in the machine if the cutting mat is dirty. It’s quite normal for a cutting mat to get dirty over time. However, you can fix it easily by rinsing it with dish soap and water.
Rinse the cutting mat, and use dish soap and a scrubber to remove the dirt. Avoid scrubbing too harshly. Finally, rinse it with water and let it dry. Now, you can check if the materials are still getting stuck in the machine.
Problem 4: Cricut Joy Making Loud Noise While Cutting
Sometimes the Cricut Joy makes weird noises while cutting, including noises of blade scrubbing, stuck material, and grinding noise. It can happen due to misaligned materials, heavy materials, and incorrect settings. You can fix it using these troubleshooting methods.
Fix 1: Turn Off the Cricut Joy
Start by turning off the machine. To turn it off, disconnect its power cord from the power supply.
Fix 2: Remove the Cutting Mat and Material
After turning off the Cricut Joy, remove the cutting mat and material from the machine.
Fix 3: Run a Simple Cut On Cricut Joy
To check if the machine has been fixed, now use these steps:
- Insert a normal paper into the machine.
- Send a random design and check if the machine still makes noise.
However, please select a paper from the material settings in the Design Space to start cutting. If the machine still produces noise, continue with the next steps.
Fix 4: Check the Blade and Blade Housing
If the machine is still making noise, there must be a problem within the blade or blade housing. In this case, check and clean the blade using these steps.
- Open the latch for the blade housing at the front of the machine.
- Remove the blade housing by pulling it upwards.
- Press the plunger at the top of the blade housing to release the blade.
- Check if the blade has any material stuck, such as paper, vinyl, etc.
- Remove the dirt and stuck materials with a soft brush or blow compressed air.
- If there is a stuck material, you can also use a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol to clean the adhesive material.
This is how one can stop the Cricut Joy machine from making weird noises. Now, try to cut any material by selecting it under the material settings in the Design Space.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
There are multiple reasons why a Cricut Joy makes weird noises, such as incorrect material settings, a dull blade, or stuck material. If the material is stuck in the machine, the blades won’t cut it, leading to inappropriate cuts. Therefore, users should clean the blade, verify that the correct material is selected, and then take a test cut.
If the Cricut Joy stops working in the middle, it happens due to connection issues or power issues. In this situation, check if there is a distance of only 10-15 feet between the Cricut machine and the device, and if the machine is powered on from the main power switch.
If the Design Space isn’t recognizing your Cricut Joy machine, ensure the machine is well connected to the power source and to the computer via Bluetooth. To fix this problem, forget and repair the devices together, and reconnect the Cricut Joy in the Design Space.
